This year, I was toying with the idea of staying at home instead of going abroad. I decided it would probably be cheaper to go on holiday within the UK. So I did some research, and to my surprise, I actually found it would be cheaper to go abroad!

The thing is, I think British holiday companies are putting their prices up because more people will be staying at home due to the recession – so I capitalised on this and booked a holiday abroad.

I thought it would cost me a lot, but after doing a bit of research, I actually managed to save a fair bit of money – so how did I save money on my summer holiday?

1. Search for the best package deal online
I started by searching for package deals. It took me quite a while because there are so many websites to search from, but I just picked three popular sites and used their search facilities.

I managed to find a couple of reasonable deals that matched my circumstances. To give an example, I found a 7 nights 5* half-board holiday to Turkey for £500 per person.

The reason I searched online is because from past experience, going directly to travel agents can often be more expensive.

2. Now try searching for your flight and hotel separately
After I had found a reasonable package deal, I searched for my flight and hotel separately. The findings from this were actually quite interesting. I managed to get flights to Turkey for less than £135 per person (£133 to be precise), and as for the hotel – that would cost just £300 for the entire 7 nights – which would add up to £433 per person.

The only thing to bear in mind here is the cost of a taxi transfer from the destination airport to your accommodation. Package holidays do sometimes include this in the final quote, but when you pay separately for you flight and hotel, you will – in most cases – have to arrange this yourself. It could cost anywhere between £10 and £70, it all depends how far away you are from your hotel.

3. Shop around for the best exchange rates
When buying your currency, it is important to shop around for the best deal. You could go to any shop and change your currency, but if you do your research you may find that you can get a better rate elsewhere.

I did my research, and I managed to get an extra 15 euros than I would have done if I had gone to my local shop!

So there you have it, that was how I saved money on my summer holiday. I worked out that if I had just gone to the travel agents and paid the premium for the package deal and currency, my holiday would have cost me over £800 (per person). However, because I did my research, I managed to save over £100 on my holiday and get it for £686 (per person)!
